The dispute of a South American championship youth category was the brainchild of Chilean leader Luis Valenzuela, president for the time of the South American Football Confederation.
This longstanding goal of such an illustrious leader materialized in the year 1954 with the completion of the first tournament in Venezuela. The South American youth
with was an idea born in 1949, when Uruguay took part in a major tournament in Santiago, Chile, with young players, because of a players' strike that year.
The participation of young players broke strike and encouraged the leaders to organize in future competition with players under 19 years.
Caracas had the honor of being the initial site of the competition in March and April 1954, having as main stage, the imposing Olympic Stadium in the University City. Colonel Frank

The country will spare no resources to organize a championship class, which also had as many South American countries. Nine
selected Caracas attended the meeting, eight in South America and a guest of the Caribbean, Panama, in the absence of Bolivia and Argentina.
Two groups of four countries each, distributed as follows: Group A with Uruguay, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador and Group "B" with Brazil, Peru, Paraguay and Panama. Venezuela entered directly into the final round. At the end of the tournament
Uruguay won the Championship title, Brazil was the second box and Venezuela in third place, but played fewer games than the Peruvians who were fourth.
to Caracas and the Venezuelan football, was a success in the organizational side, there was massive attendance of 266,868 fans and raised Bs, a whole fortune at that time.
Since 1977 this event was used to classify three countries of our continent to participate in the World Cups of the category.
Until 1988 the tournament was played as an Under 19 it was reserved for players under that age. Beginning the tournament in Argentina in that year was spent playing as Sub 20.
From the South American World Cup qualifier in 1997 Malasya were 4 teams into the tournament ranked countries worldwide.
Venezuela has held three American, the first in 1954 with headquarters in Caracas and Uruguay as a Champion.
The second was held in the cities of Merida and Valencia in the final series in Caracas and Uruguay champion again and the third tournament was played between San Cristobal and Puerto Ordaz in 1991 and was champion Brazil.
